- Once in Persia reined a king. Who upon his signet ring? Graved a maxim true and wise, which, if held before the eyes. Gave him counsel at a glance. Fit for every change and chance; solemn worlds, and these are they; "Even this shall pass away".
- I would rather be a poor man in a garret with plenty of books than a king who did not love reading.
- There is a close correlation between getting up in the morning and getting up in the world.
- A man should live with his superiors as he does with his fire; not too near, lest he burn; not too far off, lest he freeze.
- Don't concern yourself with matters that are not your business.
- Visit not without invitation.
Speak not unless question.
- Speech is silver.
Silent is gold.
- Honesty is the best policy.
- It is said for that for money you can have everything, but you cannot.
You can buy food, but not appetite;
Medicine, but not health;
Knowledge, but not wisdom;
Glitter, but not beauty;
Fun, but not joy;
Acquaintances, but not friends;
Servant, but not faithfulness;
Leisure, but not peace.
You can have the husk of everything for many, but not the kernel.
